Study Danish compared to manuka honey: honey Dane is the best germicidal
A new study shows that Danish honey kills more bacteria than New Zealand medicinal honey that is used for some health conditions.
Honey was collected for the study from two beekeepers in Denmark and central Shelland in order to be compared with Manuka honey from New Zealand.
The study compares honey produced from the nectar of 13 different Danish plant species, such as white clover, linden and heather.
The honey was collected from July to August 2016. The honey has since been examined in the laboratory.
The osmotic effect of honey, the pH values and the antibacterial effect were tested in the laboratory.
A new study confirms that honey from several beekeepers in Denmark has better germicidal properties than New Zealand honey.
The property of honey is that it contains a very powerful enzyme that converts sugars into hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide then helps kill the bacteria. Among other things, we've shown this in our large study, says Steen Matzen, MD, the Department of Plastic and Breast Surgery at University of New Zealand Hospital in Roskilde.
And here the result is better than expected, apparently from the chief physician.
Danish honey kills most bacteria
We have looked at how honey affects the different types of bacteria in a test tube. And there we can see that Danish honey has a strong inhibitory effect on many bacteria. In fact, it is stronger than some honey that can be bought as medicinal honey from New Zealand, says chief medical officer Sten Matzen.
Steen Matzen also believes there is a special reason why Danish honey is such a powerful soldier against bacteria.
